10 Comments10%20Comments1027 Glyphs27%20Glyphs27I began by exploring the theme of decaying objects, such as fruit, and studied the shape (and change of shape) of the objects, as they progressivly fell apart. By creating hand drawn sketches i began to create a typeface that looked as though it was rotting/melting away. I used a traditional typeface, Times New Roman, that could be considered as quite boring and a font which has been around for a long time and then used it as a base font which i then made to look as though it was rotting and falling apart by refering back to my earlier sketches. This font appears as a clone of ookii because that's where I started it, thinking I'll just add the shadows. Getting the shadows to look natural and line up properly in every character was a geometric challenge. I ended up redrawing the whole thing three times over--in incremental step up of scale before getting it right. I love doing fonts like this one.ookii--shadowed.%3Cbr%3E%3Cbr%3EIt%20looks%20quite%20simple%2C%20and%20in%20the%20end%2C%20it%20was%2C%20though%20getting%20to%20the%20end%20was%20anything%20but.%20This%20font%20appears%20as%20a%20clone%20of%20ookii%20because%20that%27s%20where%20I%20started%20it%2C%20thinking%20I%27ll%20just%20add%20the%20shadows.%20Getting%20the%20shadows%20to%20look%20natural%20and%20line%20up%20properly%20in%20every%20character%20was%20a%20geometric%20challenge.%20I%20ended%20up%20redrawing%20the%20whole%20thing%20three%20times%20over--in%20incremental%20step%20up%20of%20scale%20before%20getting%20it%20right.%20I%20love%20doing%20fonts%20like%20this%20one.

That's where I planned to leave it in private (and you're probably thinking that's where I should have left it). Check the creation date - it's been stranded for a while. This is the first in a set of text face experiments, and it reveals the beginnings of an evolution of high contrast fontstructing over a minimized grid space. Not all glyphs are how I wanted them to be. Some may be hideous. The spacing is terrible. But as a fontstruction, this one really got me to push the bricks to develop some resemblance of a Times Romanesque sharp serif typeface. Many, many tricks had to come in to play to make this happen at its current state. Overlapping bricks, brick stacking, overlapping brick stacking. It's all in there. I learned a lot from this insane attempt just from the lowercase letter forms alone. I mean, just look at that g! Try it at your own risk. 6x8 grid space, Double XY. But don't worry, this is as bad as it gets. It does get better from here, but only a little bit, so don't get your hopes up. Well, at least I thought so. Why not follow up, then, with my first pixel font ever? I spliced in lower case, old-style figures, tweaked a couple caps and symbols from Lex’s original and made some headway on the extended character set.
