4 Downloads4%20Downloads46 Comments6%20Comments6329 Glyphs329%20Glyphs329Meet the Exempla family's youngest daughter: Exempla Slab Ultra Light. Nice for clean geometric designs, and as always with complete Basic Latin, More Latin and Extended Latin A sets. (Though I must admit I've started to regret the huge amount of characters I have to do for each new addition. I'm sure the family would be growing quite a bit faster with a reduced character set. Well... sometimes perfectionism comes at high a price.)

12 Downloads12%20Downloads1211 Comments11%20Comments1162 Glyphs62%20Glyphs62The ‘Sans Serious’ Series is a group of tribute typefaces meant to honor Dutch designer and typographer Jurriaan Schrofer.

Along with Wim Crouwel and Josef Albers, Jurrian Schrofer (1926 - 1990) was among the Bauhaus pioneers of grid-based modular typography and design.

Schrofer's work experimented with type, light, and color and focused on mathematical shapes and pattern.

From the book ‘Dutch Type’ by Jan Middendorp:

“Schrofer made several attempts to create complete typefaces - one of which was wittily called Sans serious - but this was never his goal. ‘Is it necessary’, he wrote, ‘to make complete alphabets with upper- and lowercase, figures, diacritics and seriously adorned with a name, when the aim is merely a formal investigation into basic recipes’ Schrofer's domain was never the design of typographic alphabets, to be used by other designers, but always the creation of letterforms ‘made to measure’ as part of his own designs of - mainly - book covers and postage stamps. He created a rectangular alphabet as the basic element of his ever-changing covers - each based of the same grid but colored differently - for a series of scientific books, ‘Les textes sociologiques’ from Mouton Publishers. He made sophisticated pixel-based letters, all drawn by hand, and experimented with photographic screens as a means of distinguishing simplified letterforms from the background. He created logotypes built from custom-made letterforms, based on rectangular grids.”

“In his booklet ‘Letters op maat’ (‘Type made to measure’, 1987), Schrofer presented many of his experimental alphabets from the 1960s and '70s. The booklet was part of a series of goodwill publications edited by Wim Crouwel for Lecturis Printers, Eindhoven.”

Read more from ‘Dutch Type’.

311 Downloads311%20Downloads3116 Comments6%20Comments684 Glyphs84%20Glyphs84It started when kolarek posted the RÖFIX logo as his inspiration for his Blokinjo FontStruction. I wondered if that logo could be recreated exactly in FS. Turns out, it could. Having done that exercise, it was time to move on to play with other character designs. In a short while the whole set was done that matched the logo characters. Then the playing really began. Over the last 11 days, enough variations for each character were generated to fill three fonts. This is just one of those three.$=Alt. s%=Alt. alt. s<=Alt. V>=Alt. W[=Alt. U]=Alt. alt. W\=K|=Alt. 85 Downloads85%20Downloads855 Comments5%20Comments598 Glyphs98%20Glyphs98This Fontstruction was produced after plugging in the Atari 2600 the other night and falling in love all over again with the minimalist simplicity of the game Breakout.

A little Jobs/Wozniak drama from the development story of the game Breakout:

"Breakout, a discrete logic (non-microprocessor) game, was conceptualized by Nolan Bushnell and Steve Bristow, after the latter had "rejoined" Atari after the merge of Atari subsidiary Kee Games.

"Al Alcorn was assigned as the project manager, and began development with Cyan Engineering in 1975. The same year, Alcorn assigned Steve Jobs to design a prototype. Jobs was offered USD$750, with an extra $100 each time a chip was eliminated from the prospected design. Jobs promised to complete a prototype within four days. Jobs noticed his friend Steve Wozniak—employee of Hewlett-Packard—was capable of producing designs with a small number of chips, and invited him to work on the hardware design with the prospect of splitting the $750 wage.

"The original deadline was met after Wozniak didn't sleep for four days straight. In the end 50 chips were removed from Jobs' original design. This equated to a $5000 USD bonus, which Jobs kept secret from Wozniak, instead only paying him $375."

Version 2.1 has more Latin characters and more punctuation. Also, there are a few modifications to character widths. The old letter designs were almost monospaced. The new varied widths should help with character recognition even at smaller sizes.

This is a FontStruct version of the type I designed for my identity. This translation seemed like a logical one. My original concerns for my identity type were modularity, proportion and weight. These characteristics make both the inspiration and its FontStruct cousin perfect for bold headlines and being extruded in 3D.

"Anni Albers began a three decades long collaboration with the internationally recognized design company Knoll in 1951. During the course of this partnership, Knoll released five of Anni's designs: Track, Rail, Lattice, Jhet and Eclat. Originally designed in 1974 as an upholstery pattern, Anni Albers' Eclat, was first produced printed on a cotton/ linen ground in various scales and color combinations. Reintroduction into the market as part of Knoll's 60th anniversary archival collection celebration in June 2007, Eclat, renamed Eclat Weave, is now produced as a woven, rather than printed, upholstery."
