12 Downloads12%20Downloads1211 Comments11%20Comments1162 Glyphs62%20Glyphs62The ‘Sans Serious’ Series is a group of tribute typefaces meant to honor Dutch designer and typographer Jurriaan Schrofer.

Along with Wim Crouwel and Josef Albers, Jurrian Schrofer (1926 - 1990) was among the Bauhaus pioneers of grid-based modular typography and design.

Schrofer's work experimented with type, light, and color and focused on mathematical shapes and pattern.

From the book ‘Dutch Type’ by Jan Middendorp:

“Schrofer made several attempts to create complete typefaces - one of which was wittily called Sans serious - but this was never his goal. ‘Is it necessary’, he wrote, ‘to make complete alphabets with upper- and lowercase, figures, diacritics and seriously adorned with a name, when the aim is merely a formal investigation into basic recipes’ Schrofer's domain was never the design of typographic alphabets, to be used by other designers, but always the creation of letterforms ‘made to measure’ as part of his own designs of - mainly - book covers and postage stamps. He created a rectangular alphabet as the basic element of his ever-changing covers - each based of the same grid but colored differently - for a series of scientific books, ‘Les textes sociologiques’ from Mouton Publishers. He made sophisticated pixel-based letters, all drawn by hand, and experimented with photographic screens as a means of distinguishing simplified letterforms from the background. He created logotypes built from custom-made letterforms, based on rectangular grids.”

“In his booklet ‘Letters op maat’ (‘Type made to measure’, 1987), Schrofer presented many of his experimental alphabets from the 1960s and '70s. The booklet was part of a series of goodwill publications edited by Wim Crouwel for Lecturis Printers, Eindhoven.”

Read more from ‘Dutch Type’.

136 Downloads136%20Downloads13616 Comments16%20Comments1657 Glyphs57%20Glyphs57I've been seeing a lot of almost-completely-filled-blocks-with-chips-in-them kind of fonts lately. Quite well promoted too. I find most of them to be illegible. No matter what someone says about style and movement and period, to me, type exist to communicate, and legibility is the keystone of that functionality. If I can't decipher the glyph as a letter in a fraction of a second, the typeface has failed, no matter how beautiful it might be to look at as a graphic element. This is what I have tried to do here: taken a current trend and tried to make a legible typeface, staying within the parameters of said style. Most glyphs are quite legible but some are not, like s v w 0 8 9 & etc. I have failed as well.   Plus I am not happy with the consistency—or lack thereof—either. It bothers me that the inside chips had to be rotated from character to character or move them about here and there. I did the uppercase as well...then deleted them all because I just couldn't resolve the similarity between H and N. I may have to find a less ______* new hobby.* stationary? senatory? The intention was to create a modern, geometric headline-font with a unique touch. At the beginning only a few letters (like A, D, O) had the cross on them, but then I decided to use this element for the whole font.
Hope you like it, take a look at the example. 8 Downloads8%20Downloads826 Glyphs26%20Glyphs26Odin (один) is the Russian world for ‘singular’ or ‘one’ and translates to mean ‘the originality of an element that
has no predecessor’ or ‘is alone in it’s kind.’ The typeface Odin represents this idea in a two-fold manner. First, the
typeface has a single serif per letter. Instead of ornamenting each character with multiple serifs, a single serif is
used to highlight a dominate feature in the form. Secondly, the idea of only one serif on a character is unique to
the serif style of lettering.

The name ‘Odin’ represents the strong Russian influence in the letter styles. With the thick, chunky aesthetics
reminiscent of woodcuts, and the strong planar shifts, the aggressive nature that the Russian style is known for is
depicted here.

This typeface is best used for headline type because it draws attention and authority to whatever it is saying. The
weight of each form also allows for an intensive use of color if so desired. The typeface can also be versatile in it’s
nature. If used more sparingly, it can create a quieter, humbler tone.Odin%20%28%D0%BE%D0%B4%D0%B8%D0%BD%29%20is%20the%20Russian%20world%20for%20%E2%80%98singular%E2%80%99%20or%20%E2%80%98one%E2%80%99%20and%20translates%20to%20mean%20%E2%80%98the%20originality%20of%20an%20element%20that%0D%0Ahas%20no%20predecessor%E2%80%99%20or%20%E2%80%98is%20alone%20in%20it%E2%80%99s%20kind.%E2%80%99%20The%20typeface%20Odin%20represents%20this%20idea%20in%20a%20two-fold%20manner.%20First%2C%20the%0D%0Atypeface%20has%20a%20single%20serif%20per%20letter.%20Instead%20of%20ornamenting%20each%20character%20with%20multiple%20serifs%2C%20a%20single%20serif%20is%0D%0Aused%20to%20highlight%20a%20dominate%20feature%20in%20the%20form.%20Secondly%2C%20the%20idea%20of%20only%20one%20serif%20on%20a%20character%20is%20unique%20to%0D%0Athe%20serif%20style%20of%20lettering.%0D%0A%0D%0AThe%20name%20%E2%80%98Odin%E2%80%99%20represents%20the%20strong%20Russian%20influence%20in%20the%20letter%20styles.%20With%20the%20thick%2C%20chunky%20aesthetics%0D%0Areminiscent%20of%20woodcuts%2C%20and%20the%20strong%20planar%20shifts%2C%20the%20aggressive%20nature%20that%20the%20Russian%20style%20is%20known%20for%20is%0D%0Adepicted%20here.%0D%0A%0D%0AThis%20typeface%20is%20best%20used%20for%20headline%20type%20because%20it%20draws%20attention%20and%20authority%20to%20whatever%20it%20is%20saying.%20The%0D%0Aweight%20of%20each%20form%20also%20allows%20for%20an%20intensive%20use%20of%20color%20if%20so%20desired.%20The%20typeface%20can%20also%20be%20versatile%20in%20it%E2%80%99s%0D%0Anature.%20If%20used%20more%20sparingly%2C%20it%20can%20create%20a%20quieter%2C%20humbler%20tone.
