The block like structure of the wood and then the spiral effect. I also looked at Wooden table arrangments that resembled wood shavings, like ribbon curls. I wanted a contiuous theme to run through and link all the glyphs together. So i used the ribbon like structure as the backbone to all the uppercase and then serifs to link the Glyffs to each other. There is also a suggestion of movement in the style, as it is italic. I kept the decorative theme as well, to stay true to the concept behind the idea. Originally based on teeth braces, then it turned into the internally reinforced steel bars in concrete pillars. That are used in the construction industry to help support buildings secondary flooring and roofs. Having helped my father build several houses as a young man, making this font resurrected many 'back breaking' days of shoveling cement into wooden jibs then dropping in the reinforced steel....! It is certainly a lot easier designing a font.
