Over 2,000 posters were produced by the W.P.A. to raise awareness and support the arts. I have a lot of admiration for these posters and a style of sign painters' lettering that was common in the U.S. during the 1930s-'40s. WPA Gothic gets much of its inspiration from this poster in particular. This FontStruction stays true to the sample’s simple letterforms, but the FontStruct grid does present a few limitations. For more refined typefaces of this style check out Futura Display, Tourist Gothic, FF Moderne Gothics, Refrigerator, and MVB Solano Gothic by some of my favorite type designers, two of which (Van Bronkhorst and Parkinson) are East Bay natives. WPA Gothic has a few alternate glyphs hanging out in the Extended Latin slots with more to come. To get a look at the typeface outside the confines of the FontStruct sampler, here's a sample poster. In the process of drawing these new weights, I began modifying some of the forms of the new glyphs away from the original Chesterfield glyphs in order to build a more flexible brick/grid structure for the development of various weights. The most noticeable difference between these three new faces and the original is the lowered x-height. That said, there are still some compromises between the different weights and because of that I've given them these royalty names instead of the normal practice of light, regular, and bold weight names. One of the biggest compromises occurs in the Prince weight, where I was unable to add the notch where bowls and shoulders meet stems (see King and Queen weights) without adding too much extra black weight to those parts of the glyph. A work in progress for sure. Any help/thoughts/repulsions/bile appreciated. It's a solution to a fabricated problem. Getting the basic characters in, it is, evidently, not mono-spaced, even though all glyphs end at the same grid square on the right. One problem is the lack of control over the width of space. Other issues come up as well, such as the period (full stop) has to be way over there to the right of this font's grid to make it the same width as the rest of the characters.Conclusion? Mono-spaced fonts are just not possible in fontstruct at this point. :( Correct me if I am wrong.
