63 Downloads63%20Downloads6315 Comments15%20Comments1556 Glyphs56%20Glyphs56I've been seeing a lot of almost-completely-filled-blocks-with-chips-in-them kind of fonts lately. Quite well promoted too. I find most of them to be illegible. No matter what someone says about style and movement and period, to me, type exist to communicate, and legibility is the keystone of that functionality. If I can't decipher the glyph as a letter in a fraction of a second, the typeface has failed, no matter how beautiful it might be to look at as a graphic element. This is what I have tried to do here: taken a current trend and tried to make a legible typeface, staying within the parameters of said style. Most glyphs are quite legible but some are not, like s v w 0 8 9 & etc. I have failed as well.   Plus I am not happy with the consistency—or lack thereof—either. It bothers me that the inside chips had to be rotated from character to character or move them about here and there. I did the uppercase as well...then deleted them all because I just couldn't resolve the similarity between H and N. I may have to find a less ______* new hobby.* stationary? senatory? Sitting around idle. I think I played enough with it to make it my own. Like the two-story lowercase g and lowercase a. Squishing that middle stroke really gave this one a personality. I kept all the counters rectangular, try not to hide the hard edges. This is my first time going through the diacritics to give me a holler if you see something wrong.Like%20Masphalt%2C%20the%20original%20inspiration%20for%20this%20one%20comes%20from%20%3Ca%20href%3D%22http%3A%2F%2Fhowdoyouspellkjartansson.com%2F%22%3EStefan%20Kjartansson%3C%2Fa%3E%27s%20Black%20Slabbath.%20%20I%20think%20I%20played%20enough%20with%20it%20to%20make%20it%20my%20own.%20%20Like%20the%20two-story%20lowercase%20g%20and%20lowercase%20a.%20%20Squishing%20that%20middle%20stroke%20really%20gave%20this%20one%20a%20personality.%20%20I%20kept%20all%20the%20counters%20rectangular%2C%20try%20not%20to%20hide%20the%20hard%20edges.%20%20This%20is%20my%20first%20time%20going%20through%20the%20diacritics%20to%20give%20me%20a%20holler%20if%20you%20see%20something%20wrong.

777 Downloads777%20Downloads77713 Comments13%20Comments13206 Glyphs206%20Glyphs206The Works Progress Administration (W.P.A.) was the largest agency of FDR's "New Deal", employing millions of people. Over 2,000 posters were produced by the W.P.A. to raise awareness and support the arts.

I have a lot of admiration for these posters and a style of sign painters' lettering that was common in the U.S. during the 1930s-'40s. WPA Gothic gets much of its inspiration from this poster in particular. This FontStruction stays true to the sample’s simple letterforms, but the FontStruct grid does present a few limitations. For more refined typefaces of this style check out Futura Display, Tourist Gothic, FF Moderne Gothics, Refrigerator, and MVB Solano Gothic by some of my favorite type designers, two of which (Van Bronkhorst and Parkinson) are East Bay natives.

WPA Gothic has a few alternate glyphs hanging out in the Extended Latin slots with more to come.

To get a look at the typeface outside the confines of the FontStruct sampler, here's a sample poster.

Looking through the gallery, I still don't see any attempts. Creating a serif font with blocks is very much a square peg for a round hole, but I enjoyed the challenge. I tried to emphasis all the minor details, like angled stress, or the bottom terminal of the lowercase b. I spent a lot of time on this months ago, but after a while, just lost the drive to complete all the characters. 52 Downloads52%20Downloads525 Comments5%20Comments598 Glyphs98%20Glyphs98This Fontstruction was produced after plugging in the Atari 2600 the other night and falling in love all over again with the minimalist simplicity of the game Breakout.

A little Jobs/Wozniak drama from the development story of the game Breakout:

"Breakout, a discrete logic (non-microprocessor) game, was conceptualized by Nolan Bushnell and Steve Bristow, after the latter had "rejoined" Atari after the merge of Atari subsidiary Kee Games.

"Al Alcorn was assigned as the project manager, and began development with Cyan Engineering in 1975. The same year, Alcorn assigned Steve Jobs to design a prototype. Jobs was offered USD$750, with an extra $100 each time a chip was eliminated from the prospected design. Jobs promised to complete a prototype within four days. Jobs noticed his friend Steve Wozniak—employee of Hewlett-Packard—was capable of producing designs with a small number of chips, and invited him to work on the hardware design with the prospect of splitting the $750 wage.

"The original deadline was met after Wozniak didn't sleep for four days straight. In the end 50 chips were removed from Jobs' original design. This equated to a $5000 USD bonus, which Jobs kept secret from Wozniak, instead only paying him $375."
