"~" is a space without a drip. "-" is a beginning splat, and periods, exclamation points, and question marks are closing splats. "|" is a close without a splat. "_" is a drip that you can add to the character before it. For example, you might think the drips in "banana" are too repetitive, so you can use "n_" instead of "N" to get an n with a different drip. The concept was, quite simply, to create a replacement for one of the fonts in the game City of Heroes, hence the name. It did turn out to be slightly too heavy, so I'll be working on the medium version next...! The lower case is a negative of the UPPER CASE to allow you to combine the full matrix – and as the letters are built out of multiple bricks in FontStruct, you'll need to use a few extra spaces to separate words – or insert '>' to make it exact – as I've offset the left margin to force a 1 unit letter space. Here's a sample in action. Identified as "No. 1229" in their Lettres Fantaises of 1896, it sports a very fine side shadow, which I've attempted to re-create here. (I found the "No. 1229" sample on Hoefler & Frere-Jones' blog - fifth image from the top.) This FontStruction is split in two to make downloading possible. A little Jobs/Wozniak drama from the development story of the game Breakout: "Breakout, a discrete logic (non-microprocessor) game, was conceptualized by Nolan Bushnell and Steve Bristow, after the latter had "rejoined" Atari after the merge of Atari subsidiary Kee Games. "Al Alcorn was assigned as the project manager, and began development with Cyan Engineering in 1975. The same year, Alcorn assigned Steve Jobs to design a prototype. Jobs was offered USD$750, with an extra $100 each time a chip was eliminated from the prospected design. Jobs promised to complete a prototype within four days. Jobs noticed his friend Steve Wozniak—employee of Hewlett-Packard—was capable of producing designs with a small number of chips, and invited him to work on the hardware design with the prospect of splitting the $750 wage.
