"~" is a space without a drip. "-" is a beginning splat, and periods, exclamation points, and question marks are closing splats. "|" is a close without a splat. "_" is a drip that you can add to the character before it. For example, you might think the drips in "banana" are too repetitive, so you can use "n_" instead of "N" to get an n with a different drip. Identified as "No. 1229" in their Lettres Fantaises of 1896, it sports a very fine side shadow, which I've attempted to re-create here. (I found the "No. 1229" sample on Hoefler & Frere-Jones' blog - fifth image from the top.) This FontStruction is split in two to make downloading possible. The issue was not getting the letters done—they are rather simplistic after all—it was more to do with getting the preview windows to display the letters correctly. I tried lots of different filter settings. The slim break lines only previewed properly at 1.5 scaled bricks or below but they were too thick at that point. 1.8 brick scaling gave the desired result but left the preview a mess. Catch-22 is such a nightmare for perfectionists. In the end, I chose the correctness of glyphs over preview. Hence, the imperative letter A.
